Dental Implants in Sherman Oaks, CA

Dental implants are an effective solution for replacing missing teeth and serve as a fixed alternative to removable dentures. Made of titanium, these artificial roots and teeth are surgically placed in the upper or lower jawbone by a dentist or periodontist. They provide strong support, enhance smiles, and have a long lifespan, although they may need re-tightening or replacement over time.

Reasons for Dental Implants:

  • Replace missing teeth without affecting nearby teeth.
  • Alleviate joint pain or bite issues caused by shifting teeth.
  • Restore confident smiles and improve chewing, speech, and digestion.
  • Support bridges or dentures for added comfort and stability.

The Process

Getting dental implants involves several visits over a few months. Initially, X-rays and impressions are taken to evaluate the bone and gum structure. The implant is surgically placed and left to heal for up to six months. Depending on the type, a second surgery may be needed to attach a post for the artificial tooth.

After a few weeks of healing, the artificial teeth are crafted and fitted, which may take one to two months due to multiple fittings. You will receive care instructions post-treatment, and maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental visits is essential for the longevity of your implants.

Periodontal Surgery

"Periodontal" means “around the tooth.” Periodontal disease affects the gums and bones supporting the teeth. Plaque, a sticky film of food, bacteria, and saliva, can harden into calculus (tartar) if not removed. This buildup can damage gums and bone, leading to symptoms like red, swollen, and bleeding gums.

Surprisingly, four out of five people have periodontal disease without knowing it, as it is often painless in its early stages. It is the leading cause of tooth loss and may be linked to other health issues, including stroke, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Smoking also increases the risk.

To reduce the risk of periodontal disease, maintain good oral hygiene, eat a balanced diet, and attend regular dental check-ups.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Bleeding Gums: Healthy gums should not bleed during brushing or flossing.
  • Loose Teeth: Caused by bone loss.
  • New Spacing Between Teeth: Indicating bone loss.
  • Persistent Bad Breath: Due to bacteria.
  • Pus Around Teeth and Gums: A sign of infection.
  • Receding Gums: Loss of gum tissue around teeth.
  • Red and Puffy Gums: Healthy gums should not appear swollen.
  • Tenderness or Discomfort: Caused by irritation from plaque and bacteria.
